Are there any entry requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements, but you should note that the course is pitched at an advanced (university graduate) level, and that we expect participants to have a grounding in social research methods. The following checklist is designed to help you assess your knowledge of social research methods:

  • Are you familiar with the differences between quantitative and qualitative methods?
  • Do you feel comfortable with research terms like validity and generalisability, samples and populations, ethics and consent?
  • Can you think of the advantages and disadvantages of different types of methods - eg for observation, focus groups, surveys or interviews?
  • Faced with interview transcripts, do you know of ways to analyse them that are robust?

How many hours does it take?
You would be expected to spend around 5 hours a week studying in addition to the classroom sessions.

Please contact us if you would like to discuss in more detail whether the course is suitable for you.

As part of the course is delivered online, you will also require:

  • convenient access to a reliable computer and the internet
  • basic IT skills, including use of Windows or Mac based applications, the web and email.
