grounding in social research methods. The following checklist is designed to help you assess your knowledge of
social research methods:
Are you familiar with the differences between quantitative and qualitative methods?
Do you feel comfortable with research terms like validity and generalisability, samples and
populations, ethics and consent?
Can you think of the advantages and disadvantages of different types of methods - eg for
observation, focus groups, surveys or interviews?
Faced with interview transcripts, do you know of ways to analyse them that are robust?
How many hours does it take?
You would be expected to spend around 5 hours a week studying in addition
to the classroom sessions.
