Masterclass
Assessing the impact
of your research
Event venue The Cuillin Room, Charles Stewart House, 9-16 Chambers Street, Edinburgh.
Date 29 November 2011 • 12.30pm - 5pm (Lunch included)

Description

This half-day workshop provided an opportunity to get hands-on experience
of assessing the impact of the participants own research. Building on an impact assessment framework developed using contribution analysis, the masterclass allowed participants to build a case study of the impact research, either on a project, programme, or research centre level. During the afternoon there was the opportunity to build a contribution story for research, assess risks and assumptions and start to identify useful indicators of research impact.

The Masterclass was run by Sarah Morton and Katrina Reid.

Sarah Morton has ten years experience of activities to increase the uptake
of research at CRFR. She has also been investigating the processes of
research impact as part of an ESRC funded PhD study. This included
developing and piloting a framework for assessing impact across a range
of projects. She has also assessed different potential methods and indicators for research impact.

Katrina Reid has experience of supporting community and voluntary sector
organisations to demonstrate the difference made by their activities though
providing training, 1:1 support and facilitating peer support opportunities
for developing self evaluation tools and techniques . The demonstration of
soft outcomes has been an area of particular focus thorughout. Katrina has
also focused on sharing the impact of these services, learning generated
and celebrating successful inititiatives in a range of ways which are engaging
for other voluntary organisations, local authorities and the Scottish Government.
