description |
The General Register Office
(GRO) for Scotland has identified low fertility in Scotland
as a problem, and a major contributory factor in population
decline and population ageing. However fertility rates vary
widely across the country. This project concerned the social
interactions and attitudes underpinning the variation in fertility
rates within Scotland. It had two main aims:
1. To increase our understanding of attitudes to fertility and
their relationship to fertility behaviour in Scotland.
2. To investigate the influence of socio-cultural interactions
on fertility attitudes and behaviour.
The study involved a module on fertility incorporated into the
next Scottish Social Attitudes Survey (SSA) augmented by local
geographic information. The module was prepared by the research
team with the Scottish Centre for Social Research and after
consultation with the Scottish Executive. |
