Project title Care and Support Needs of Men who Survived Childhood Sexual Abuse
Funding details The Big Lottery
Research team Sarah Nelson, Lynn Jamieson.
Dates 1st October 2006 to 31st May 2009
Type of project Current research project
Keywords Men, sexual abuse, interpersonal violence
Project description CRFR worked, in collaboration with the mental health charity health in mind, on a major new research project with financial support from the Community Fund.
The project produced some groundbreaking research findings in Scotland, as, while quite a bit of work has been done on the needs of abused women, male survivors have taken longer to feel able to speak out about their experiences.

The project was managed by health in mind, which already does a great deal
of work with survivors of childhood abuse. CRFR carried out the research on its behalf, with Sarah Nelson as researcher, supervised by Lynn Jamieson.
The qualitative research project used life-history methodology to explore the impact of the men’s childhood experiences on their wellbeing and relationships through the lifecourse.
The aim was to identify points where intervention and support might have made a positive difference, to document their views on the kinds of support they would have found helpful, and to make recommendations for practical improvements
to services. The research findings will also contribute to a training programme for both statutory and voluntary agencies.
