Project title Supporting Care Homes Residents with Dementia at Night
Funding details Funded by the Joseph Rowntree foundation
Research team Heather Wilkinson, Colm Cunningham, Diana Kerr
Dates to 2009
Type of project
Keywords Ageing and older people, community care, health, illness and health promotion
Project description The catalyst for this research came from a study funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (Wilkinson et al’s 2004) that highlighted important issues related to supporting an individual to prepare for and maintain sleep at night, but that equally demonstrated the vital need to support the individual during waking periods at night.

Sleep disturbance is more common amongst people with dementia (Fetveit and Bjorvatn, 2002; Cole and Richards 2005) and can have a major impact on the ability of support staff to meet the needs of the individual with dementia within a care home setting (Fetveit and Bjorvatn, 2002). Having residents awake through the night can have severe resource implications for a care home, can increase workload and stress for the staff, and can have a negative affect on other residents. In establishing a better understanding of night-time support needs, more effective and positive practice can be developed to ensure that the needs of all residents and staff are met.

In this project an action research methodology was used to increase understanding and knowledge around supporting the night time care and management of older people and people with dementia who live in care homes.
