description |
This two year ESRC funded study
investigated the experiences and expectations of people living
alone between the ages of 25 and 44, a period of adulthood conventionally
associated with partnership and parenting. The aims of the study
included deepening our knowledge and understanding of the social
capital and quality of life of working age adults living alone,
and to consider how this might vary in different types of rural
and urban localities. The project had two phases of data collection.
The first phase involved 140 telephone interviews with men and
women across Scotland, using the Scottish Household Survey as
a sampling frame. The second phase involved follow-up face to
face interviews with 36 of these respondents, mainly in their
own homes. These interviews explored respondents’ expectations
and aspirations for the future in relation to areas such as
housing and place of residence, employment and leisure, and
partnership and parenting. Presentations on the study have been
made in Warwick, Edinburgh, Helsinki, Lisbon and Amsterdam.
The research findings were presented at a seminar held in Edinburgh
in October 2009.
