Project title Training in Research with and about Children
Funding details Funded by: ESRC Research Methods Programme
Research team Dr Kay Tisdall, Dr John Davis, Dr Viv Cree, Professor Lynn Jamieson, Sarah Morton and Elaine Mowat
Dates
April 2004 – March 2005
Type of project Completed research project
Keywords Children and young people, education and training
Project description The aim of this project was to develop an advanced, interdisciplinary training package for those undertaking research with and about children.
The training package will combine:
• tutor-facilitated sessions
• a skills-based resource text presenting case study material and practical exercises
• a web-based learning resource giving access to online discussion, interactive exercises and additional course materials.
The project focused on ‘research design’ in its wider sense of engaging with decision-making, self-reflexive good practice and judgements about fitness for purpose throughout the whole process from first ideas to dissemination. The training was designed for those with a first degree in social science and subsequent experience as researchers, research commissioners or research consumers, research managers or teachers.
Pilots of the training course ('Listening to Children: Research and Consultation') took place in late 2004 - early 2005.
