This workshop, for implementing music engagement in dementia care, is relevant to anyone in a carer’s role – care staff, community carers and family carers.Dr Kirsty Beilharz, Director of Music Engagement, HammondCare Australia will look at research findings and then workshop practical ways to apply music in your context. The workshop will:

  • Present real-life case studies based on our experiences in practice
  • Explore practical ways to tailor individual music & workshop a test-case
  • Involve participatory exercises in listening and optimising a sonic environment to suit people with dementia
  • Invite you to discuss and review your experiences
  • Find relevant applications for relating to people living with dementia through the empowering connection of music
  • Unpack the key findings in research literature that can be applied in care practice (e.g. reminiscence and story-telling, relating and communicating, vitality and cognitive stimulation)
  • Look at ways to enhance the care relationship using music engagement (reducing agitation & behaviours, pain management, mealtimes and grooming)
  • Break down obstacles (transcending different languages, working positively with cultural diversity, connecting across different generations, facilitating family, friends and volunteers)
  • Compare the distinct benefits of individualised tailored music, group music and socialisation, and creative expression through active music-making
