Inequality and intergenerational family relationships: methodological and theoretical issues
The paper will focus on intergenerational relationships in families and how these constitute a lens with which to understand the perpetuation of inequality and the transformation of family fortunes. Taking the notion of a break or disruption, it will examine how an external change such as migration reshapes practices and relationships across generations. The paper will demonstrate some of the methodological strategies employed to examine change and continuity in one intergenerational chain consisting of a migrant grandfather and his UK born son.
